As IBM ponders the future after breaking off its initial attempt to acquire Sun Microsystems, there are several possible scenarios for how the company will proceed with its systems technology. A variety of internal and external forces will affect the choices that IBM makes as it negotiates some key uncertainties, potentially leading to several alternative paths. This report presents four scenarios for how IBM might respond to various needs as it navigates these divergent paths.The conclusion is that IBM is likely to go forward with its plans to acquire Sun and adopt the Solaris operating system. |
